On November 8, 2025, Exile Land — Huang Huang Solo Exhibition officially opened at Gallery W in Shibuya, Tokyo. As Huang Huang’s first solo exhibition abroad, the exhibition marks the extension and evolution of his artistic language within a broader cultural context. The exhibition is curated by President of the New York Branch of the Eurasia–America Art Alliance | Kelly, with Li Di serving as Academic Director.

The exhibition presents twenty distinct character figures, whose creation is largely inspired by the artist’s past dream experiences. The works are primarily realized through 152 printmaking plates and are further expanded through animation, installation, and other multidimensional spatial approaches, forming a distinctive visual atmosphere and narrative structure. By interweaving dream and reality, the artist explores, on both visual and psychological levels, the condition of spiritual exile and the search for inner belonging in an era defined by constant mobility, ultimately constructing a dual spatial dialogue between consciousness and existence.

The exhibition features twenty characters, including Feliz, Symbiosis, and Mori no Ko. Each character is defined by a distinct personality, where conflicting emotions—such as contradiction, sensitivity, and obstinacy—intertwine and remain in constant flux. Through a fragmented narrative structure, these characters convey an underlying emotional tension to the viewer. Among them, Feliz is the first character created by Huang Huang within this series, serving as both the point of origin and the emotional nucleus of the entire narrative system.

President of the New York Branch of the Eurasia–America Art Alliance | Kelly notes that Huang Huang’s works articulate a visual language in which entanglement and clarity coexist, revealing the flow of emotion and the tension of life. Through the deconstruction and reconfiguration of form, the artist constructs visual vessels capable of containing complex human emotions, dissolving the boundaries between nature and the living. This process enacts a dynamic transition from repression to release, reminding viewers that life is not a static specimen, but a continuously flowing, warm, and vital state of being.

Peter Huang, Founder and Creative Director of P&M Studio, observes that Huang Huang’s works are striking for their distinctive linear language. These lines possess a strong sense of rhythm and emotional tension, while simultaneously preserving moments of blankness and suspense within the narrative. In Exile Land, Huang Huang constructs not a linear storyline, but a floating structure of consciousness situated between reality and fantasy, encouraging viewers to encounter the works through sensory perception and emotional intuition rather than rational decoding.Peter Huang further notes that the artist’s practice emphasizes the free flow of lines and an openness toward the unknown. Viewers are invited to actively generate meaning through their own experience, rather than passively interpret predetermined narratives. This approach may be encapsulated in the artist’s guiding notion: “Do not continue to anticipate within a space constructed by expectation.” Such a stance reflects Huang Huang’s distinctive contemplation on modes of viewing and engagement.

The team of Mimi Jin Studio extends its message for Huang Huang’s solo exhibition:“How many times does one dream in a lifetime? Dreams intertwine, overlap, and shift in complex ways, impossible to fully count. As projections of the subconscious, parts of the self are always left behind in the depths of the night. What we hope to do is to allow the life of these fragments to continue within reality.”

Titled Exile Land, the exhibition suggests that emotions arising in dreams are often concealed deep within consciousness and appear to be cast away upon waking. Yet these emotions never truly disappear; they persist within an inner, spiritual realm. In Huang Huang’s practice, intuition remains central to artistic expression. Through diverse modes of presentation, the exhibition further expands this “exiled land,” allowing the works to unfold with both visual depth and emotional intensity.

It is reported that the Tokyo exhibition will remain on view through November 24.
